Popular Trial of the Debt and the IMF kicks off with the first #MondaysAgainstTheDebt
Health and the Environment will be the theme of this first Forum of Denunciation, recognizing, in the midst of the social and health emergency, the tremendous consequences that the Debt and the policies imposed by the IMF have on these fundamental rights of the population and nature. Dr Fernanda Boriotti, president of FESPROSA; Dr Medardo Ávila, of the Network of Doctors of Fumigated Populations; Dr Melisa Ostrej, of the Assembly of Residents and Concurrents; Dr Guillermo Pacagnini, Secretary General of the Union of Health Professionals of the Province of Buenos Aires CICOP; Dr Eduardo Maturano, of the Association of State Employees ATE-Health and the National Federation of Associations of University Teachers, Investigators, Creators and Artists CONADU-H Regional Córdoba; and representatives of the Lomas de Zamora Water Forum, will present their denunciations.
Successive #MondaysAgainstTheDebt forums will be dedicated to hunger, territory and food sovereignty, work, women, native peoples and extractivism, among other themes that reflect the challenges and daily struggles that people face in order to stop paying on a debt that they don´t owe.
Members of the popular tribunal and prosecution will be present at all the Forums of Denunciation. They were installed last July 13, as part of the tribute to Alejandro Olmos held by the Open Call to Suspend Payment and Investigate the Debt. That day marked the 20th anniversary of the judicial ruling in the case against the debt fraud that Olmos initiated in April 1982, at the height of the dictatorship. The popular tribunal is composed of Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Nora Cortiñas, Nina Brugo, Alejandro Bercovich and Miguel Julio Rodríguez Villafañe.
Pérez Esquivel, in that act, highlighted the current importance of the struggle that Olmos undertook, remarking that "the debt is a political problem, a problem of domination." He valued this new initiative of the popular campaign to suspend payment and investigate the debt, as an effort to "help clarify the paths to follow because a democracy cannot be subjected to a system of domination. The people of Latin America, not just our people in Argentina, must undertake a cultural rebellion in order to find paths of freedom, independence, and sovereignty.
Popular organizations throughout the country are invited to take an active part in the Popular Trial of the Debt and the IMF, to conclude during the Week of Action against the Debt and the IMF, October 10-17. We invite you to get in touch via the channels of the Open Call, or directly to the Tribunal's Secretariat: juiciopopulardeuda@gmail.com .
